Step-by-step guide: simple cushion cover

  1. Materials
    • 50 × 50 cm cotton fabric
    • Matching thread
    • Needle or sewing machine
    • Pins, scissors and tape measure
  2. Measure and cut
    • Mark two 45 × 45 cm squares on the fabric (leave 2.5 cm seam allowance per side).
    • Cut with fabric scissors along the lines.
  3. Edge hem
    • Fold 1 cm to the wrong side and iron; then fold another 1.5 cm and iron again.
    • Pin around the entire perimeter.
  4. Main seam
    • Using a straight stitch (by hand) or a normal stitch (on a machine), sew the four sides, leaving one side open to insert the cushion.
    • Reinforce with a backstitch at the beginning and end.
  5. Finish and flip
    • Cut the corners diagonally (without damaging the seam) to reduce bulges.
    • Carefully turn the cover right side out.
  6. Cushion entrance
    • Insert the pad; if desired, add a button, Velcro, or simple bow closure.
