Practical step-by-step guide
Ready to turn your phone into a portable measuring station? Follow this daily and weekly plan; combine the three tools—Measure, Smart Measure and Physics Toolbox Sensor Suite—and you will discover that measure accurately with apps It's easier than it sounds.
- Morning calibration routine (3 min)
– Open Measure (iOS) or Smart Measure (Android) and place your phone on a flat table.
– Slowly rotate the device in a “∞” motion; this will align the magnetometer and gyroscope… ready for precise measurements!
– In Physics Toolbox, check that the accelerometer displays “0 m/s²” at rest. If not, repeat the spin until the reading stabilizes. - Taking daily measurements (morning, 10 min)

Precautions and care
– Adequate lighting: Cameras depend on good contrast; in dim light, measurements deviate.
– Avoid reflective surfaces: Mirrors or polished metals confuse the laser and ARKit.
– Keep the lens clean: A single fingerprint can add centimeters of error… and nobody wants that!
– Check the temperature: Sensors may vary by ±2°C if the phone has been exposed to sunlight for hours. Wait for it to cool and then measure again.
– Update frequently: The latest versions fix calibration bugs; don't delay downloading.
– Repeat measurements: Make at least three attempts and average them out; this way you minimize outliers.
